The San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club is a place for local horseshoe pitchers to find other horseshoe pitchers, where to play in the City, and how to participate in regional and national tournaments sponsored by the NCHPA and NHPA. Oct. 22 (Sat) 9:30 AM: GOLDEN GATE CLASSIC - NCHPA Return to Golden Gate Park Horseshoe Tournament!
Come join us for the Norther California Horseshoe Pitching Associations first sactioned full National Tournament in San Francisco in 22 YEARS!!!
This Tourament will be hosted by the Half Moon Bay Horseshoe Club along with the SFHPC. Please visit their club or website. You must be a registered member of the NCHPA and qualified to pitch in this tournament since you must have a qualified ringer percentage rating to participate. The SFHPC is in the process of becoming a member club in the Northern California Horseshoe Pitching Association prior to this tournament. We will provide opportunities for SFHPC members to join the NCHPA and toss 100 horseshoes in order to establish your initial ringer percentage. Who you play in the tournament is based upon your ringer percentage and games can be handicapped. Tournament will follow official NHPA rules. Players will be grouped to compete against players of similar skill level (ringer average %) in a round robin within your classification. Prizes, raffles, and great competition. This tournament will be drawing players from all over the State of California and out of State. Come watch and play with some of the best horseshoe pitchers in the State. The Golden Gate Classic and future SFHPC tournaments are being brought to you by the partnership the San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club is forming with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department in a committed effort to build community relationships that assist in the restoration and maintenance of our city's park facilities. We are restoring our corner of the Park and welcome everyone to participate and enjoy this historic public facility by playing the sport it was created for in 1922. We gratefully thank the SFRPD management and staff for their assistance and support in restoring the Horseshoe Courts and making events like this possible.

We will be an 'official' club in time for the 2011 Golden Gate Classic, the 1st nationally sanctioned tournament in 22 years in SF!!
You must be a member of the NHPA to participate in sanctioned tournaments. Annual Membership in the SFHPC will be $35/year. $27 goes to State & National Dues, $8 will go to the club fund. You will obtain a qualified ringer average and be able compete in your ringer average class at tournaments across the state and country. First Saturdays: Noon - 4 pm: 1st Saturday of the Month Challenge Tournament & BBQ.
***the tournament is "officially" on hold until next spring when we'll resume again. BUT if the weather is nice it's likely people will be there to play.
Every 1st Saturday of the Month will be an open challenge tournament and bbq. Show up at noon and toss your name in a hat.
Teams will be drawn at random for a single elimination tournament. ... Cost of entry is pitching in for BBQ & beer.

Sept. 10 (Sat): 3rd Annual Guardsmen SF Horseshoe Tournament & BBQ
Another Fantastic Tournament held by the Guardsmen of San Francisco!!! We filled the courts and had a great day with both A & B divison play drawing first time players as well as a couple of former World Champion pitchers!! A delicious smoked BBQ by the Guardsmen and Beer Garden donated by Sierra Nevada Brewery. This year they provided a nice selection of different beers to select from! A Special Thank You to Damon Bruce from Sports Radio KNBR 1050AM noon-3PM who was the Master of Ceremony, and SF Rec & Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg who came out to support all of our hard work bringing top quality horseshoe pitching back to San Francisco. The Guardsmen and the San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club proudly announce the 3rd Annual Horseshoe Tournament at the historic Horseshoe Courts in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
On Saturday, September 10th, we continue on the momentum of last year's great event; and will be hosting the 3rd Annual Horseshoe Tournament. This event will be a 64 team, double elimination horseshoe tournament, BBQ sandwiches, Sierra Nevada beer garden, with KNBR's Damon Bruce as the master of ceremonies.
Registration is $50 per two player team and $15 per spectator (both include food and beverage). Play starts at 11:30am (come 1/2 hour prior to register)

Team Knocked Up! from the East Bay Summer Series went UNDEFEATED to win
1st place and title of LORD OF THE RINGER for 2011! Kevin Grimes and his pregnant wife were a force to beat....although...there were some protests that it was an unfair advantage being 3 against 2!
Jeff Williams and his partner fought hard and took home 2nd Place after barely squeaking by last year's Lord of the Ringer Champions Team 006, Peter Zepponi & Gino Rinaldi.
Team 006 was up 21 - 20, but with the 'must win by 2 rule' invoked, Williams shut the door with a six pack and moved onto the finals leaving 006 in 3rd place.
One of the most memorable matches of the day was 006 vs. the East Bay Summer Series team 'Harder Than a *****'s Heart'. HTAWH had a massive 17-2 lead over team 006 but could not close the deal and was crushed 21-17 without being able to score another point!!! A loss not soon to be forgotten for sure...I bet they'll be looking for a rematch in Livermore on July 3oth.

May 18, 2011: The first steps were taken today by SF Rec & Park to restore the restrooms and maintenance closet! After being closed for 20 years, SFRPD has begun to evaluate the current state of the facilities. SFHPC and the Friends of the Oakwoodlands are partnering with Parks Trust to pursue additional grant funding in order to continue the restoration of the horseshoe courts and surrounding amenities as well as the Oak Woodlands and trails.

May 14th (Sat) Noon-5 pm: Cal Poly SLO Alumni Tournament & BBQ!

The was the First Annual Horseshoe Pitching Tournament and BBQ organized by the SFHPC and the Cal Poly Alumni Association.
This was a charity fundraiser open doubles tournament to support the CPAA Bay Area Scholarship Program.
All players welcome, not just Cal Poly Alumni.
BBQ tickets will be also available for non-playing adult and children spectators. Sign up, bring your family and enjoy a day in Golden Gate Park.
You are encouraged to pre-register even for the just the BBQ so we can plan accordingly.

Nov. 19, 2010: SFHPC in the National News! on PBS NewsHours with Jim Lehrer.
On Thursday Nov. 18, the producers of PBS NewsHour contacted me to get some horseshoe pitching footage to open and close a piece on the Bay Area's ranked ballot voting system.
So that afternoon I met them at the GG Park Horseshoe Courts to shoot some footage. And for the record...they told me to MISS! Thanks to Gloria Koch-Gonzalas , GG Park Director, and the office of the General Manager for rapidly mobilizing to clear out a dozen or so piles of debris, glass, rocks, trash etc that SFHPC members had swept and raked up the day before during a volunteer clean up.

Nov. 16, 2010: Horse Sculpture Restoration: Thomas Sperow is continuing the restoration on the Horse Sculpture. He has drilled and epoxied a number of steel anchors into the cliff to provide a solid attachement for the restoration work. Nov. 15, 2010: Not Horseshoes, but SFHPC founder and architect Peter Zepponi broke ground on two new US Bocce Federation regulation tournament bocce ball courts in Justin Herman Plaza directly in front of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero. Zepponi Architects donated all the design services for this project to continue to build relationships with the City & County of San Francisco and the SF Rec & Parks department.Mayor Newsom, and supervisors were on hand for the offical ground breaking ceremony. Also present was Benji Tosi, 7 x US National Bocce Champion,and past US Bocce Federation President John Ross. This project was a joint venture with Platinum Advisors, Salesforce.com, AECOM, Boston Properties, Zepponi Architects, Webcor Builders, City/Co of SF, SFRPD, SFDPW, Local Laborers' #261, and the US Bocce Federation.

1) SFHPC member Tony Rinaldi, 9 yrs old, won the California State Junior Cadet Horsehoe Pitching Title over Labor Day Weekend in Bakersfield, CA!!! WOW! Winning the state championship in his first year to participate!!! Way to go Tony!

2) On Oct.22nd 2011, we will be hosting the Half Moon Bay horseshoe pitching club for a sanctioned NCHPA tournament!!! This will be the first in nearly two decades. During the summer we will provide more information and opportunities for players to become qualified to pitch in this sanctioned event!
3) Any Cal Poly SLO grads out there??? We are in the process of working with the Nor Cal and SF/SJ Cal Poly Alumni Associations to schedule a Cal Poly Alumni Horseshoe Tournament and BBQ!!!
4) SF Police & Fire Tournament??? We are in the process of trying to organize an SF Police & Fire horseshoe tournament.

Since 1947 The Guardsmen has been helping at-risk youth with the resources they need to thrive. Each year The Guardsmen sends 2,500 youth to outdoor education programs and provides scholarship support more than 250 students at Bay Area private schools.

John (Jack) O'Brien: grew up in San Francisco and played at Golden Gate Park throughout his life. He was a member in the 30's up until 1992 or so, and had a love of horseshoes. He won several tournaments, was a State Champion, played against all the top players in the Bay Area, including Don Titcomb, and many others and owned one of the highest throwing percentages during his time. He also played in Burlingame, Santa Cruz as well as others in the Bay Area and was also a member in San Jose in the 80's as well.
Born in 1919 in S.F., and passed away in 1993. Lived on Cole Street in 1959 just blocks from the park when son Tom O'Brien was born, then moved to San Bruno shortly thereafter.
He'd continue going to the park through the 60's, 70's & 80's, playing tournaments, and to meet up with old friends and players.

I believe the club house burned down in the 80's which was really too bad, as they had many photo's on the walls of all the previous tournaments along winners and members.

Some of the names Tom remembers are Bill Fraser, Jack Seymour, Paul Mori, and Guy Zimmerman.

GG Park Sculptures - Vet Anderson

Jesse Sylvester "Vet" Anderson (1875-1966), cartoonist, comic strip artist, illustrator, and sculptor, was born May 01, 1873 in Bear Lake, Manistee Co., Michigan and died in January 14, 1966 in Palo Alto California, burial January 17, 1966, Military Cemetary, San Bruno, CA. Father: David Anderson Mother: Esther Hicks. Married: abt. 1929 in London England. He got the nickname "Vet" because he was a veteran of the Spanish American War at the age of 23. He was a well-known cartoonist of the early nineteen hundreds. His drawings appeared in such magazines as Puck, Judge and Life. He had given that all up and turned to the new animated cartoons.

The Concrete bas-relief sculptures of the "Horse" and 'Horseshoe Pitcher' were done in 1937 by Jesse Sylvester "Vet" Anderson. He studied sculpture under Paul Landowski (1875-1961) www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Landowski in Paris. Landowski's single best-known work is the 1931 Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro . He was an artist on cartoons and comic strips for the Detroit Free Press and the New York Hearld Tribune, and New York Globe. Vet participated in the 1922 Salon des Artists Francais show in Paris. In the late 1910s, he worked with animators Dick Huemer and Raoul Barre in NYC on the Mutt and Jeff series. In the 20s, he worked with Paul Terry and Max Fleischer in NYC. In 1931 he came to California to work with Walter Lantz on 15 "Oswald the Rabbit" cartoons. In 1933 Vet worked on a 9 minute animated version of "The Wizard of Oz" in Canada, (Not the later famous 1939 version by MGM with Judy Garland). In 1937 he came to San Francisco to work on two bas-relief sculptures for the WPA Horseshoe Courts in San Francisco. Some of his work is in the Cartoon Museum, SF.

Vet is survived by his daughter Loma who remains a Bay Area resident. (2009) She has provided the photos of Vet below.

Here's a cute Sunday strip from 1902. Hardy Hiram ran from 3/2 to 4/13/1902 in the New York Tribune. At first glance you'd think that the cartoonist failed to sign the strip, but if you look at the chicken on the right in the last panel you'll see that its tailfeathers spell out V E T.

There was a "Vet" Anderson that kicked around animation for a number of years. He animated for one or more of the small shops that produced the silent Mutt & Jeff cartoons in the teens under Bud Fisher's name. I believe that he also worked at the Fables Studio for Paul Terry during the 1920's. He was at Max Fleischer's New York studio in the early thirties and then moved to Walter Lantz's studio in California. He seems to have been a bit older than most of the kids in that business. If memory serves, he was called Vet because he served in the Spanish-American War.

Some animation histories confuse him with Carl Anderson (of Henry fame) who was an animator for the Bray Studio in 1916 or so.

Hey Frank -
Great thought there! I hadn't thought of Vet Anderson - guess I was stuck on the idea that the letters were initials. Anderson has one known newspaper comic strip credit at the NY World in 1908, so he was interested in doing newspaper work.

Unless someone has reason to believe this isn't Vet Anderson, I'm going with that.

That is Vet Anderson's signature. (My wife is one of his grandaughters.) He was a political cartoonist at the New York Herald Tribune and the Detroit Free Press. He also sculpted two bas-reliefs in Golden Gate Park - San Francisco near the Horseshoe Pits - a Horseshoe Pitcher and Horse.

Saturday April 17th! Not strictly a horseshoe tournament but it involves pitching horseshoes and sounds fun!!

The Irish Immigration Pastoral Center is holding a fundraiser Treasure Hunt through the City and one of the spots will be the Golden Gate Park Horseshoe Courts along with a horseshoe challenge that has to be passed in order to move on to the next location. The SFHPC is providing the horseshoe pitching equipment for the event.

Round #2 : SUMMER SERIES in Livermore, Aug.1, 2009
The SFHPC showed up ready to play at Round 2 of Ken Baker's Summer Series in Livermore on Saturday August 1, 2009! Rico Castro, aka Clownbaby, came to play once he finally found the horseshoe pits! He picked up a local partner and took home 2nd Place!!! Nice job Rico!...Rico's team edged out Lord of the Ringer 2nd place finishers Peter Zepponi and Jon Bastian in two very tight matches. Peter & Jon took 4th place, with Peter winning the overall title of "Ringer King", with a tournament high of 37 ringers, with 5 doubles. The tournament was a lot of fun, with the "whiskey shot challenge' called frequently against the San Franciscans to knock us off our game. But we held our liquor and held on to finish in the #2 & #4 spots! Besides all the great prizes, tournament sponsor Prime Smoked Meats, Inc, donated 3 lbs of thick cut smoked bacon to each of the participants! We literally brought home the bacon. Who says there's no money in horseshoes? Ken Baker puts on one fun tournament! Highly recommended if you like cold beer, good music and spending a sunny Saturday tossing some shoes. I especially liked the themed music for the finals! Nice touch. Don't miss Round No. 3. Rumor has it, that Ken is going to include a BBQ and beverages in the registration fee for the next one! We're looking forward to seeing several of these guys in Golden Gate Park for the September 12th SF International Horseshoe Pitching Tournament! Beware! the winner of this tournament has already registerd for Sept 12th. Alemeda fire fighter and dead eye horseshoe tosser Eric Frego has teamed up with one of the famed Livermore Gibson brothers to create a tough team to beat. Let's see if SFFD can send a team to match them!

Who We Are:

SFHPC Founded: August 21, 2008
The San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club website is a place for San Francisco horseshoe pitchers to find other horseshoe pitchers and to let them know where they can find public horseshoe pits in the City.

I started this website out of a desire to pitch horseshoes in San Francisco, and disbelief that there is not a horseshoe pitching club in this city! When people ask why I live in San Francisco I say it is because San Francisco has everything! San Francisco has a croquet club ...but not horseshoes? That had to change. (no disresect to the croquet club...I played with them once and it's fun! ...just not horseshoes!)

I grew up playing horseshoes and wanted to continue playing, but couldn't find anyone to play with and the nearest clubs are either in San Jose, Half Moon Bay or Santa Rosa. All of which are too far to drive to after work. After scouring the internet, I've identified only TWO public horseshoe pits in San Francisco. Stern Grove and Golden Gate Park. If you know of others please post it on the Where To Play Horseshoes page. A standard residential lot in SF is only 25 ft wide and usually on a hillside, two situations that makes installing a backyard horseshoe pit virtually impossible. That leaves public horseshoe pits as about the only possible option for residents who want to play locally. San Francisco is the second most densely populated major city in America with over 765,000 residents. That's nearly 16,000 people per square mile!....I can't be the only one who pitches horseshoes! So I started this site to help find the other players, and started practicing at Stern Grove in the meantime.

Short Term Goal:
Have fun, and meet a few other players to pitch with.

Long Term Goal:
Establish: The San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club with official members and NCHPA affiliation.
Schedule: Set dates and times where you can show up for a pick-up game
Tournaments: Hold Local, and NCHPA / NHPA sanctioned tournaments.
Community Service: Clean up, restore and maintain the very few places to pitch in SF.
Network: With other local clubs and organizations to promote horseshoe pitching as an annual club or corporate outing event.
Promotion: Establish a presence on internet search engines and local media outlets so that people know we are here and can easily find us.
Sport Development: Sponsor afterschool leagues, clubs and inter-school tournaments to develop future players.

How to Join:

Just click on the SIGN UP! button at the top right of this page and follow the instructions. This club is FREE! We need members so sign up and get on the roster of members. Even if you only play a couple times a year, knowing people are using them helps Rec & Parks to assign staff to help keep the pits maintained. I have met many more pitchers out there than have signed up. Join the roster and be counted. It doesn't matter if you pitch once a year, every day or have never thrown a ringer. Just go out and have fun...and the good thing about horseshoes is it's the people who make it fun...not necessarily how good you are at it.

Jan. 13, 2010:
SFHPC and the Guardsmen have been awarded a SF Community Challenge Grant for the continued restoration of the Golden Gate Horseshoe Courts!!! On January 12 we held a meeting with the top managers and directors for the Golden Gate Park, Natural Areas Programs, SF Parks Trust, Natural Trails program, SF Neighborhood Park Council, Oak Woodlands restoration, the Guardsmen, Tree Frog Treks, landscape architect Masato Kametani and architect Peter Zepponi. The horseshoe court restoration will be a key feature of the larger Oak Woodlands restoration and Natural Trails program. Several other community stewardship partners are being developed with organizations such as Tree Frog Treks who have come forward and committed to being ongoing stewardship partners. Several upcoming volunteer workdays are being planned to continue the ongoing Oak Woodland and Horseshoe Court restorations. Significant hillside stabilization and native plant restoration is well under way. Projects that we are currently planning for under the grant are the completion of the new iron backstops and railings, new concrete, artwork restoration, and utilizing the presently welded shut restrooms for an SFHPC maintenance clubhouse and functioning restroom on a limited hours or event basis. While it is fantastic to have an operating budget to continue the restoration progress, but we are still well short of necessary funding to complete the entire scope of work that we have identified to make this a top landmark destination within the Park and City. Donations of time or money to the cause are welcome. Also thank you to Supervisors Elsbernd, Mar, and Mirkarimi, the SF Park Commission, SF Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg, and Mayor Newsom for their continued support. Let SF Rec & Park know that you support what's going on.

The Park Bond B funds for Trail Improvements in Natural Areas are being released for upcoming construction of a main nature trail upgrade thru the Oak Woodland and around the rim of the horseshoe arena. RPD Capital and Planning lead the co-operation with Natural Areas Program leadership and volunteers. Parks Trust has agreed to lead a co-operative effort with Oak Woodland volunteers to get a City Guide / Park guided tour up and scheduled by this summer!! Increased public awareness, foot traffic and visibility will greatly improve the safety and security of this problematic area of the park.

I was there the morning of Aug. 11 with several of the top Rec & Park Supervisors and representatives from the City Manager's office, along with Ted Bartlett of the Guardsmen and SF Chronicle reporter Meredith May, MMay@sfchronicle.com . Click here to view the Aug. 18, 2009 article in the SF Chronicle! Rec & Park and the City are stepping up their efforts and putting their resource into action for this amazing restoration project! The courts are looking better than they have in decades!!! Rec & Park was out along with their plumbers, heavy equipment operators and structural improvement supervisors. We'll soon have club access to WATER! in order to maintain the pits. They are planning a few other safety improvements in anticipation of greater community use.

The Guardsmen are actively seeking donors to assist in the larger scale restoration projects. Zepponi Architects have designed a completely new galvanized steel railing system for the arena in the same style as the historic railings, but in a more durable and vandal resistant material. Bob Blanchard of Mr. Router Plumbing in San Francisco has made a $2,500 donation toward the first of our new railings!!! In addition to already donating time to cleaning out the central court drain. THANK YOU MR. ROUTER!!! S. Cudden Construction has volunteered the labor to install the railings.

As of Aug. 8th there is finally a SIGN at the bottom of the steps leading to the horseshoe courts! This is just a small temporary park sign, until a larger traditional park sign can be hung from a metal bracket off the lamp post! There are so many things in the works that Sept. 12th will be a great re-dedication of a truly beautiful and historic public recreational space!

What at turn out! Over 20 Guardsmen and volunteers came out to make some amazing progress in the restoration of the Golden Gate Horseshoe Pits. Look at the photo album to see photograhs of the work in progress.

June 6, 2009 Golden Gate Park Horseshoe Pits Clean Up
SFHPC joined forces with the Guardsmens and Hugh and Juan from the Golden Gate Park maintenance department to take the first big step to restoring the horseshoe pits!! There is a lot more work to do, and another volunteer work day is scheduled for Saturday July 11, 2009! In the meantime Rec & Park will continue their work of restoring the Oak Grove by removing the overgrowth, and vines and blackberries that are strangling the trees. They will also be removing the tons of sand and dirt that have accummulated in the pits over the last decade or more. The park police have told Rec & Park that they will begin patroling the pits at night, to help prevent further tragedies like the death of Brandon Lee Evans on Nov. 29, 2008. His family and friends have erected a memorial at the base of the steps up to the pits. Neighbors have come by to applaud the efforts and offer their support. Creating a safe, enjoyable recreational site for all San Franciscans to enjoy and be proud of has begun! Support, and interest in restoring the horseshoe pits and this corner of GGPark is coming from across social boundaries as only San Francisco can do. Rec & Park is stepping up to the challenge and their support is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Kristin, Hugh, Ramon & Juan and all the other workers we don't see!

Over 30 people showed up for Horseshoes in Golden Gate Park and a BBQ. Several people arrived early with shovels, rakes, brooms and other tools to clean up broken glass and litter and to restore several horseshoe pits into playing condition. As you can see from the photos, many of the pits are over grown with weeds and dirt and are awaiting care. Thanks to everyone who showed up, helped to clean up and had a good time. Volunteer Workday: Sat. Nov. 14th 2009 8am until 2pm with the Guardsmen and Oakwoodlands Natural Areas Program volunteers. Come early, play in the 9-10:30am tournament and then stick around to help clear out some of the surrounding overgrowth in the Oak Woodlands to improve sight lines and safety. SFHPC & the Guardsmen are joining forces with the SFRPD Natural Areas Programs Oak Woodlands volunteers to restore this entire corner of Golden Gate Park to create premier nature trails within the old growth Oak Woodlands surrounding the Horseshoe Courts.

A Fundraiser for The Guardsmen :

Since 1947 The Guardsmen have been helping at-risk youth with the resources they need to thrive. Each year The Guardsmen send 2,500 youth to outdoor education programs and provides scholarship support to 200 students at Bay Area private schools.The Guardsmen sponsors events throughout the year. Approximately 90 cents of every dollar raised at these events goes directly to scholarships, camperships, and other programs
for at-risk youth.

Schedule:
+/- 9:30am : Warm-ups and Horseshoe Pitching Clinic with the Champs.
11:30 am :Re-Dedication Ceremony
Noon: Tournament Play Starts ...until we finish.
Teams: $50/Team ($25 per person) which includes full Smoked BBQ pork shoulder and beer throughout the tournament

SFHPC, The Guardsmen, and SF Rec & Park have teamed up to restore the Golden Gate Park horseshoe pits to their original glory!!! Do not miss the historic Re-Dedication Ceremony for an historic San Francisco Treasure! We have lined up some of the worlds top players to attend this event for a fully sanctioned NHPA tournament along with a larger "Leaner League" community tournament!

Pick a Team Name! Important. First team to declare a name gets it. You'll have to pick another one. Matches will be called by team name.

Some preliminary information: (Specific Details to follow so stay tuned!!!)
This tournament will begin with a Re-Dedication ceremony for the Historic Golden Gate Park Horseshoe Area. This ceremony will be attended by dignitaries from the SF Rec & Park, police, fire, SF Supervisors, local neighborhood organizations, California State Horseshoe Pitching Champions, and 2x World Horseshoe Pitching Champion Brian Simmons! ...and the list keeps growing.
This will be a closed bracket tournament, with a smaller fully NHPA sanctioned invitational tournament. We will set up two, 32 team double elimination brackets for a total of 64 teams. The "A" Bracket will be for players with some experience, and the "B" bracket will be for novice players. Your bracket placement will be strictly on the Honor System. We'll know if you don't belong in the novice bracket! This tournament is for fun, to bring back horseshoes to San Francisco and as a fundraiser for the charitable organization, The Guardsmen.

Team Spaces are filling up fast, and we fully expect this tournament to sell out early. But if you don't make it in the tournament be sure to come down for a great BBQ, and to meet some of the best horseshoe pitchers in the world. We intend to keep one pit open for spectators, first timers and show-offs! Online Registration is OPEN at www.sfhorseshoetournament.com. Stern Grove Horseshoe Pits

Location: Stern Grove Park
On Sloat Blvd near 19th Ave. next to the tennis courts. It is the last park gate before you reach the residential houses.
Pits: 8 total; 2 clay & 6 sand
Parking: Lots of street parking; street sweeping/No Parking on Sloat Weds 8 AM to 10 AM, park on side streets.
Amenities: Drinking fountain, benches, pit covers, Stern Grove, restrooms inside part.
Hours: Daylight, no gate

When: Friday afternoons between 4:00-7:00 PM is the time I've most often seen other people there. Also weekday mornings.
Comments: These pits get some use and are the most likely to find players on. These pits have also been know as Clancy's Bocce Ball & Horseshoe Pits, after the late Clancy Steinhoff. The courts also have a sign (see photo) calling them the HUMM???_Horseshoe Pits, but part of the sign is broken off and lost. This missing words are Humming Bird.
The Stern Grove Park maintenance manager has recently agreed to help maintain the pits and has already started doing a great job! Thanks Hector! Also thanks to Half Moon Bay HPC member Don Reip who has been a volunteer steward of the pits for years.

Amenities: Beautiful setting. Restrooms are closed. Drinking fountain within a short walk.
Hours: Daylight, no gate; Not recommened at night.

<<These pits could use some general clean up. There is broken glass and litter that needs to be picked up. The other problem is that it looks like all but two or three of the pits haven't been used for a long time. Sand and dirt has blown into piles between and on the pitching platforms. A shovel and rake would do a lot of good. The couple of times I've practiced here several people have stopped to watch as they walked by. If people played here more frequently it could be a popular spot. >>

San Francisco's Golden Gate Park: A Thousand and Seventeen Acres of Stories by Chris Pollack & Erica Katz mentions the courts construction in 1926 and the Golden Gate Horseshoe Club that tended the courts. The concrete bas-relief entitled "The Horseshoe Pitcher" is by "Vet" Anderson, who was a member of the Golden Gate Horseshoe Club.

SF Horseshoe History

Do you know any San Francisco Horseshoe History? Do you have old photos? Know the names or ratings of past Champions? Past Club members, Officers...anything? If so post it here or email it to me and I'll post it. If you want to mail something, contact me. I have heard that there was a club at Golden Gate Park that had 15 - 20 men pitching over 65% from 40 ft.! Who were those guys? - Peter Z.

I recently received an email from Dave Loucks after he visited our clubs website. Dave was the president of the NHPA from1985-2003 and has been a member of that organization for 58 years (as of 2008) and has many fond memories of pitching horseshoes in Golden Gate Park. His first event there was in the 1950 junior division of a Bay Area tournament sponsored by the SF News, one of 4 daily newspapers in the City at that time. He won the junior championship that year and the next and then went on to win 3 World Junior Titles, 1951-1953. Dave later founded the National Horseshoe Pitcher Foundation, (NHPF) and in Oct 2007, finished building and opened the National Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in Wentzville, MO. In addition to this he developed, edited and published the horseshoe pitching magazine, Newsline, for 12 years.

At the time, Dave pitched against some of the best pitchers in the State and Country in Golden Gate Park. Don Titcomb, Guy Zimmerman, Paul Mori, Bill Frazer, Jack Seymour are just a few names people familiar with the sport of horseshoes will recognize. More information on all the great Northern California horseshoe pitchers can be found at the NorCal Hall of Fame at the Yolo Courts in Davis, CA. Several of the past players have donated scrapbooks and items for display.

I hope to hear from more players that have memories of pitching horseshoes in San Francisco. If you have information or photos to share please do so we can preserve the long history of this sport in San Francisco.

BILL FRASER
Bill Fraser lived in SF, was right handed and threw a 1-1/4 turn. Bill passed away at the San Jose Fairgrounds of a fatal heart attach while sitting next to Dave Loucks. He had a son, Ken, who became a very good pitcher, went into the military and years later surfaced in Syracuse, NY, as the Secy/Treas of the local horseshoe club. He has since again disappeared and no one in horseshoe circles has seen him for the past 5-6 years. Where are you now Ken?

BILL BLEXRUDE
Bill Blexrude was actually a member of the Mosswood Club in Oakland. Bill also threw a 1-1/4 turn right-handed and lived in the East Bay.

BRUCE LYONS
Bruce Lyons was more an administrator than pitcher. He ran many of the tournaments at the Golden Gate Park courts though he himself did pitch in lower classes at the time. I understand that he was a top pitcher in his time. He was right-handed and also threw the 1-1/4 turn. Bruce had a problem with his back and he was obviously in pain at times.

JACK SEYMOUR
Jack Seymour was a quiet man who lived in SF and was a painter (?) by trade. Jack pitched the 1-1/4 right-handed and was always a tough competitor in the top percentage groups.

PAUL MORI
Paul Mori was one of the elder statesman of the GGHC who was probably the best pitcher in the club. He was right-handed and threw the 1-1/4 turn but off the right foot which we referred to a bocci step. Very few pitchers then or even now pitch in this unnatural manner where you step forward with leg on the same side as you pitch the shoe. Paul was good enough to make the championship group of the World Tournament in 1947, 1949, 1951 1953 and 1957.

JACK SORG

Jack Sorg, like most of the other pitchers of that time, threw a 1-1/4 turn right-handed.

Jack played in five World Tournaments, 1988,1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993. Each time he was seeded into class play of the open men's division.

1988, seeded 55th in Class A prelims, W2, L5, averaged 55.4%

1989, seeded 61st in Class A prelims, W4, L5, averaged 58.6%

advanced to group A-2 where he W5, L6, averaged 59.5%

1991, seeded 129th., played in C-3, W5, L6, averaged 50.7%

1992, seeded in Class E prelims, W9, L2, averaged 60.9%

advanced to become Class E Champion, W6, L1, avg 67.9%

1993, seeded in Class D prelims, W10, L1, averaged 49.8%

advanced to Class D Finals, W4, L3, averaged 51.4%

The following information was provided by Jacks Grandaughter:
Jack Sorg was inducted into the hall of fame in 1989. I grew up watching him pitch horseshoes in Golden Gate park and traveled all over the state with him for tournaments throughout most of my childhood. He even became the champion in his division after battling cancer. He was an absolutely amazing man. I have so many fond memories of being with him during tournaments, especially in SF. My grandmother joined him often in his travels and my Aunt who has also since passed away, was also a horseshoe pitcher within the club, Char Sorg. My father just found a bunch of things including the picture that is my profile picture that I would like to send to you for your site. The picture I posted was taken by the SF Examiner in 1981 at the pitts in Golden Gate Park. I believe I have the flag from the chapter somewhere as well. I can still remember the smell of the eucalyptus trees and feel the cool breeze as I watched him throw ringer after ringer near the polo grounds in Golden Gate Park. I know shooting 60+% was common for him. He had a pit in his backyard that was clay for a long time. I still have his competition horseshoes. Being a member of the chapter in SF and later other chapters was a very integral part of his life. He had many friends who loved him very much. I miss him dearly. I look forward to sharing with you what I find.

George Callas
George Callas is one name missing who was a key member of the GG club. George was a very close friend of Paul Mori. They often traveled together with their wife's. George pitched well, but not as good as Paul. George threw a 1-3/4 turn right handed. He was the resident clown of the club, sometimes wearing clown glasses, funny hats and always with a joke. As a youngster, I (Dave Loucks) always had the impression that George and Paul pretty much ran the Golden Gate club.

Rules of Horseshoes

In general it's pretty basic and this should get you started. Each player takes a turn and pitches two shoes. The last player to score pitches first. A ringer is 3 points and a shoe within 6" of the pin is 1 point. "Leaners" are 1 point in official play and 2 points in recreational play if you agree before the match. A friendly game for beginners is to15 or 21 points, tournaments are typically to 40 points. A ringer can be topped and cancelled by another player, in that case the next closest shoe within 6" gets a point. A ringer cancels the other players point shoes. Only one player can score each inning (4 pitched shoes is an inning). If you don't have a 6" measuring tool, just approximate it by using the width of a shoe across it's opening. If you can touch the stake and a shoe in the pit with a horseshoe at the same time it's a point! A ringer is 3 points if you can touch both tips of the horseshoe with a straight edge and not touch the stake. Otherwise it's just 1 point. Good Luck! And have fun.
Men: Pitch from 40 feet.
Women, Juniors under 18 yrs, and Elders over 70yrs pitch from 30 feet.
Junior Cadets: Under 9 years old pitch from 20 feet and can use lightweight shoes. The Glory GXL (extra light) is the lightest full size shoe at 1 lb 14oz. This is a full size horseshoe that is modeled after the Ted Allen style shoe. The weight of this shoe is about 2lbs. 5 oz. compared to the average weight of tournament shoes of 2 lbs. 8 oz. to 2lbs. 10 oz.
