Hi All,
Happy New Year for 2012 ! On SAT Jan 14 , our ' FRIENDS OF THE OAK WOODLANDS - GG PARK, ' , a PARK PARTNER under auspices of SF Parks Alliance, with a mission to provide stewardship and resources for the northeast part of Golden Gate Park and the Horseshoe Arena, will be doing our fist for 2012 once a month work party around the HORSSHOE ARENA - landscaping , erosion control and native shrub planting. We will be working in collaboration with SFRPD's Natural Areas Program who will provide the tools and plants. This work is vital for the integrity of the Courts - protecting the surrounding slopes and providing for improved aesthetics and public safety. We invite all of you who are interested in the continuing restoration and improving functionality of the Courts to participate . Please call SF Horseshoe Club member ROB BAKEWELL for additional information . Best Regards, Rob Bakewell 415-710-9617 , <rcbakewell@yahoo.com> |

Received one hour notice that PBS was to do a shoot at the Courts .
Peter Z and Rob B swung into action , called Gloria K- G of SFRPD , and she arranged immediate ' delivery ' of several RPD employees who, with assistance from aforementioned , cleaned up the courts. One whole pick up load of garbage, and stuff taken away. Thanks to Gloria and valiant RPD clean up crew ! |

The Oak Woodlands Volunteers work with the SF Rec and Park's Natural Areas Program to provide stewardship for the Oak Woodlands Natural Area in Golden Gate Park.
The Oak Woodland area covers a large region of northeastern GG Park, roughly bound by 6th Av ( west ) , Fulton ( north ) , Stanyan ( east ) and Conservatory Dr and JFK Blvd ( south ) Within that region, and near to Stanyan / Fulton are Lick Hill and the historic Horseshoe Arena. We have a common interest with SF Horseshoe Pitchers Association in the stewardship of this area , including the restoration of the Courts. The Oak Woodlands include several ' groves ' of native habitat and original landscape that feature , as the keystone species , the Coast Live Oak- quercus agrifolia and associated shrubs and herbs. For historical and ecological reasons San Francisco has designated this region as a Natural Area to be protected and managed under the SF RPD 's Natural Areas Program. A key part of this arrangement is the role carved out for community stewardship including habitat restoration, landscape management , trail maintenance and restoration , infrastructure restoration , recreation and education development , and public safety. So Oak Woodlands Volunteers and SF Horseshoe Pitchers want to invite those who want to participate in this mission to join with us. You can go to the Oak Woodlands website at <sfnaturalareas.com> , click to Oak Woodlands to see some of our ongoing work, contact the SF Horseshoe Pitchers' Peter Z. for information and contact me , Rob Bakewell, Volunteer Steward for Oak Woodlands at 415-710-9617 for more information . We will be posting more info re this Oak Woodlands - Horseshoe Arena GG Park mission soon. ROB BAKEWELL |

Hey Guys,
I was wondering if I could get a little info on the best way to setup and fairly informal horseshoe tournament in GG park and if you all have anything planned for those pits on Sunday, 7th of November. Or if there is someone to contact to reserve them. Also was wondering if there is a pile of horseshoes I could possibly borrow or rent for that sunday. Thanks a lot for any info and your tournament photos look like a lot of fun was had. Thanks, Jake

Pops, I was thinking about you on Father's Day as I do most days. Thanks again for being the best grandpa in the world. I know you gave so much to horseshoe pitching and got so much in return. It was one of your passions. I loved traveling with you to see your tournaments as a child. I have so many fond memories of Golden Gate Park when I was the age of my daughter right now. I wish you knew her. You would have fallen so in love with her. She reminds me of you. I tell her lots of stories about you. My son, Jack, who is named after you is already showing he has your natural sports ability. I just felt like writing this to say out loud how much I miss you and how much you are thought of every day.
Love, Tammy

Just wanted to say the current issue of Via magazine has a big write up on Golden Gate Park and they mention the "newly revitalized horseshoe pits..." That's it, just thought it was cool the pits were mentioned.

The Devils' Brigade is now starting chapters in Conneticut and Louisianna. We have clubs interested in Virginia and Minnesota as well. We are starting the American Doubles Horseshoe Pitching Association. We will specialize in Non walking doubles and getting new people interested in playing shoes. I would love to start a chapter in California. Let's get a discussion going and see how to make this a reality. Take a look at our mission statement and our rank structure on the website. www.diablo-forge.com/horseshoe

Just starting a new thread to keep us up to date on people using the courts. Yesterday I visited the GG Park courts and found some students and teachers from the St. Mary's adolescent day treatment school throwing horseshoes! They're using it as physical education. This is the first school I've encountered using the courts. I hope it's a trend--that would be a potentially large user base for the site.

ive always played off and on thru my life with my dad and when we do play, weve always played that the player that tosses the shoes closest to the stake, is the only player that can get points....is this correct?in other words player one throws 2 (one is a ringer and one is w/in range). player 2 throws his 2 shoes and lands only one w/in range. we would give all points (4) to player one and player 2 gets none...thanks
