Do you know any San Francisco Horseshoe History? Do you have old photos? Know the names or ratings of past Champions? Past Club members, Officers...anything? If so post it here or email it to me and I'll post it. If you want to mail something, contact me. I have heard that there was a club at Golden Gate Park that had 15 - 20 men pitching over 65% from 40 ft.! Who were those guys? - Peter Z.
I recently received an email from Dave Loucks after he visited our clubs website. Dave was the president of the NHPA from1985-2003 and has been a member of that organization for 58 years (as of 2008) and has many fond memories of pitching horseshoes in Golden Gate Park. His first event there was in the 1950 junior division of a Bay Area tournament sponsored by the SF News, one of 4 daily newspapers in the City at that time. He won the junior championship that year and the next and then went on to win 3 World Junior Titles, 1951-1953. Dave later founded the National Horseshoe Pitcher Foundation, (NHPF) and in Oct 2007, finished building and opened the National Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in Wentzville, MO. In addition to this he developed, edited and published the horseshoe pitching magazine, Newsline, for 12 years. At the time, Dave pitched against some of the best pitchers in the State and Country in Golden Gate Park. Don Titcomb, Guy Zimmerman, Paul Mori, Bill Frazer, Jack Seymour are just a few names people familiar with the sport of horseshoes will recognize. More information on all the great Northern California horseshoe pitchers can be found at the NorCal Hall of Fame at the Yolo Courts in Davis, CA. Several of the past players have donated scrapbooks and items for display. I hope to hear from more players that have memories of pitching horseshoes in San Francisco.
